Cities
The UNLOCK THE CITY! project has identified in the four cities involved (Antwerp, Barcelona, Milan, Piatra Neamț) a set of places that played a significant role for citizens during the pandemic and therefore launched research and action paths which, considering a specific type of urban space (urban park, school and spaces used by young people, exhibition complex and vaccination centre, streets and public open spaces, etc.), explore the concept of limit (economic, social, physical, etc.) in the urban landscape.
In an initial research phase (mapping), through field investigations and studies coordinated by the Politecnico di Milano, the places where the performances were to be developed were selected with the involvement not only of the artists but also of many experts, citizens and local stakeholders.
The first description and study phase resulted in the writing of four ‘identity cards’, which are articulate descriptions of the places and the main project themes of each city. The contents of the identity cards, besides orienting the performative work, allow us to understand the qualities and differences, the emerging themes, of each context.
ANTWERP
Seefhoek and Deurne-Noord are the two Antwerp neighbourhoods targeted by the actions of UNLOCK THE CITY! They are two city areas that are clearly separated but, at the same time, equally characterised by the ring of the urban motorway that delimits them, creating a boundary between the landscape of the centre and the periphery and marking deep spatial differences, but also social and perceptual ones.

BARCELONA
In Barcelona, the focus of UNLOCK THE CITY! is the hill of Montjuïc and, in particular, the fair district at its base, the Fira de Montjuïc. With a significant role in the history of the city and its modernisation processes, the fairground and its large pavilions have adapted over the years to different functions - the main building was temporarily converted into a vaccination centre during the pandemic - and nowadays represent the border area between the thick city and the park, between the Eixample district and the productive periphery of Hospitalet de Llobregat. The project expands its area of research to Poble Sec neighbourhood in which the fair is set, the pandemic has temporarily allowed certain invisible structures and behaviours to come to light in the city of Barcelona, providing spaces for openness and critical reflection.

MILAN
The intervention area in Milan concerns the south-eastern suburbs of the city, in particular the Corvetto district and the 'Nosedo-Porto di Mare' area. Corvetto-Porto di Mare, nowadays at the centre of significant urban and social transformations, is one of the most densely populated (and complicated) districts of the city, characterised above all by its social housing - created in the first half of the 20th century - and large suburban parks. A liminal and threshold district, where the fracture between the urban texture and the large green area of the Parco Agricolo Sud is clearly perceived.
URBAN TYPE: Urban Park
AREA: Corvetto district, Nosedo – Porto di Mare Area

PIATRA NEAMȚ
The centre of Piatra Neamț houses the city's main historical monuments (such as the church built in the 15 century and the medieval tower next to it), the most important administrative institutions (the county council building and the town hall), but also represents its cultural heart, with one of the local high schools, art & history museum buildings, the ancient synagogue and the Theatre "of youth". A cultural and educational archipelago that is investigated by UNLOCK THE CITY! through the relationship with the many layers of the city's 'memory', the changes and contrasts that have characterized its history.
URBAN TYPE: Cultural - educational district
