Piccolo Teatro di Milano - Teatro d'Europa

The first public repertory theatre in Italy, the Piccolo Teatro was founded with the aim of creating a theatre that provides a public service, for the benefit of the city and its entire community. The Piccolo's original goal of being "an Art Theatre for all" has now taken the form of an extensive cultural programme that includes theatre, dance and music, with productions characterised by interdisciplinarity and internationality, staged in the three auditoriums located in the heart of Milan (Teatro Grassi, Teatro Strehler, Teatro Studio).

Support playwriting and young artists, the promotion of theatre culture understood as a tool for sustainability, openness to new audiences and an in-depth exploration of the relationship between live performance, the city and the communities that populate it, form the foundations of Piccolo's activities.

Davide Carnevali, Marta Cuscunà and Sotterraneo are the Associate Artists of the Theatre who have been entrusted to create the performances for UNLOCK THE CITY! and who will be exploring the concept of “limit” within an urban park.

The Piccolo Teatro is the initiator of UNLOCK THE CITY!’s network and the lead partner of the project.

MARTA CUSCUNÀ

Marta Cuscunà (Monfalcone, 1982) is a writer and visual theatre performer, and her work brings together activism and playwriting for puppets. In 2009 she won the Scenario per Ustica award with È bello vivere liberi!, the first chapter of Resistenze femminili, a trilogy that also includes La semplicità ingannata and Sorry boys. In Il canto della caduta she blends the ancient legend of Fanes with the principles of animatronics for manoeuvring puppets. Earthbound ovvero le storie delle Camille is a science-fiction monologue for actors and mechanical creatures, based on the latest eco-feminist essay by Donna Haraway, which the artist will be presenting for our 2022/23 season. Between 2009 and 2019 she worked with Fies Factory, an incubator-project for performance artists organised by Centrale Fies.
